**Job Description**
Due to continued growth in the energy sector, we are expanding our Transmission & Distribution team and are seeking an additional Substation Design Engineer with primary or secondary experience to join our Christchurch office.
**How you'll make a difference:**
+ Performing concept and detailed design of primary and/or secondary systems for transmission and distribution substation projects.
+ Preparing primary and/or secondary design drawings, specifications and reports.
+ Supporting senior engineers with the preparation of project and bid documentation as required.
+ Liaising with team leads, project managers and project team members to deliver designs within allocated time, budget and required scope.

We're looking for a highly skilled Photonic Design Engineer to lead and contribute to the design, development, validation, and continuous improvement of our photonics hardware and systems. In this role, you will act as a key technical leader, collaborating closely across Engineering, NPI, and customer-facing teams to ensure our products meet the highest standards of performance, quality, and manufacturability.
+ Lead and contribute to the design and development of advanced photonics hardware that meets performance, cost, and schedule goals.
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Engineering, NPI, Sales & Marketing) to ensure product specifications align with customer needs and internal capabilities.
+ Conduct feasibility studies and participate in early-stage specification development with Technical Sales and senior engineering teams.
+ Analyse product performance data to identify and implement design and specification improvements that enhance reliability, usability, and calibration processes.
+ Develop calibration methods, tools, and training materials in collaboration with the NPI team to ensure scalable and repeatable manufacturing processes.
+ Create and execute Design Validation Plans to verify product performance throughout the development lifecycle.
+ Continuously improve validation and calibration processes through data analysis, simulation, and proactive problem-solving.

In this role, you will act as a key technical leader, collaborating closely across Engineering, NPI, and customer-facing teams to ensure our products meet the highest standards of performance, quality, and manufacturability.
+ Lead and contribute to the design and development of advanced photonics hardware that meets performance, cost, and schedule goals.
+ Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Engineering, NPI, Sales & Marketing) to ensure product specifications align with customer needs and internal capabilities.
+ Conduct feasibility studies and participate in early-stage specification development with Technical Sales and senior engineering teams.
+ Analyse product performance data to identify and implement design and specification improvements that enhance reliability, usability, and calibration processes.
+ Develop calibration methods, tools, and training materials in collaboration with the NPI team to ensure scalable and repeatable manufacturing processes.
+ Create and execute Design Validation Plans to verify product performance throughout the development lifecycle.
+ Continuously improve validation and calibration processes through data analysis, simulation, and proactive problem-solving.

+ Bachelor's or Master's degree in Photonics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
+ Proven experience in photonics hardware design and development.
+ Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data-driven decision-making skills.
+ Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across multiple teams and functions.
+ Experience developing validation and calibration processes for optical or photonics systems.
+ Familiarity with PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) tools and processes.
+ Experience in customer-facing technical roles.
+ Proficiency with optical simulation tools and automation scripting.
+ Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across teams.
+ Takes ownership of responsibilities and consistently delivers high-quality work with minimal supervision.
+ Proactive and solutions-focused, able to identify risks early and propose practical, scalable improvements.
+ Analytical and data-driven approach to decision-making.
+ Polite, respectful, and able to mentor junior team members.
