This is a multi-disciplinary role, responsible for our retail operations in Queenstown, managing our on-mountain and Duke Street retail stores during winter and summer.
Reporting to the Ski Area Manager, in this role you will be responsible for ensuring guests are met with an informative, efficient and engaging level of service, whilst being matched appropriately with the products, equipment and/or services to meet their needs.
This is a full-time, permanent position.
About the Role

You will be responsible for:
- The recruitment and training of your retail team, with a focus on setting them up for success and ensuring expectations are clearly communicated early on
- Day-to-day, the roles across your team are varied, and you’ll be leading and motivating the team, ensuring they have the skills, knowledge and equipment to be able perform their duties effectively– we want our teams to feel a sense of pride and job satisfaction.
- You will also be involved in regular meetings with the Coronet Peak and The Remarkables management teams to ensure policies, procedures and practices (such as payroll, purchasing, reward & recognition and performance management and cross-utilisation) are well understood and consistently applied.
- Have a strong product knowledge, and your team will need to have the appropriate training and support to confidently engage with guests and answer questions as needed.
- Overseeing daily operations, set work rosters to ensure the departments are adequately resourced for visitation expectations, all whilst actively working alongside your team to ensure they are delivering a consistent and engaging service.
- Accurate data entry skills, including the manual entry of all stock items into the sales software.
- Regular category and storewide stocktakes which allow you to measure your progress against budget goals.
- Ef fective merchandising which supports our brands coupled with a proactive and passionate sales-focused team.
- Maintaining excellent relations with our core suppliers and quantifying and placing our retail orders for stock across our three mountains.
- Leading by example, setting the standard for all retail staff members.
- Challenging the status quo, seek to maximise efficiencies and ultimately deliver an increase in yield.
The Retail crew are crucial to the overall success of our ski area operations and it’s vital the team are prepare every day to welcome guests and manage queues effectively. Strategic workforce planning will be required to ensure all staff are utilised to their full potential and can all provide a consistent level of service. A key challenge of this role will be managing the expectations and motivation of the team throughout the highs as well as the lows of the season. We are therefore seeking a leader who can ensure the team deliver an exceptional and safe service whilst maximising efficiencies.
Retail touches many parts of our business. Through the Ski Areas, the Snow Centre team, Marketing, Admin and more so the ideal candidate has a proven history of developing strong respectful relationships within the organisations they have worked in.
About You
The successful applicant will ideally have experience with ski retail products, experience in purchasing both hardware and merchandise with proven excellence at managing inventory including experience in stock management (including back-end systems experience). Coupled with successfully demonstrating your capacity to thrive in an alpine environment, passion for customer service, and ability to lead a diverse team.
Skills & Experience
- 3 years specific ski retail experience
- Excellent customer service & communication skills and willingness to lead others in these areas
- Purchasing and stock control
- Stock management – including user of back end systems
- Management of direct reports including recruitment
- An understanding of sales, stocktakes and merchandising
- A practical problem solver, able to remain calm under pressure and plan ahead
- Ability to develop effective on-going relationships with staff, guests and other stakeholders
- Previous supervisory experience would be considered advantageous
