Join the Waimakariri District Council, where we are dedicated to supporting our teams professional growth, while having a positive impact on our community.

Our Aquatics unit operates two main facilities year round – Dudley Park Aquatic Centre in Rangiora and Kaiapoi Aquatic Centre. Our outdoor facilities – Oxford Community Aquatic Centre and Waikuku Beach Paddling Pool, operate through the summer period.

As well as providing a space for recreational swimming, we offer a range of services to our customers including learn-to-swim programmes, aqua aerobics classes and athletic swim coaching. We are taking expressions of interest now for Aquatic Team Members to Lifeguard our pools, and deliver a range of Learn to Swim programmes to our customers, with shifts available afternoon, evening and weekends.

As a Lifeguard in our Aquatics team, you will take responsibility for:

  • Supervising customers using our pool facilities to ensure we are providing a safe, comfortable environment
  • Pro-actively monitoring and preventing accidents and incidents
  • Carrying out pool water tests to ensure water quality standards are met
  • Administering first aid and emergency care when required

As a Learn to Swim instructor in our Aquatics team, you will take responsibility for:

  • Delivering engaging lessons in group and/or individual settings
  • Assessing and recording swim evaluations for participants of the Learn to Swim programme
  • Following lesson plans designed to meet the needs of students at a range of levels and abilities

To succeed in these positions, you will be:

  • Customer focused and enjoy engaging with members of the public
  • Self motivated and highly organised, with the ability to work semi autonomously
  • A collaborative team player, with a positive, flexible attitude
  • NCEA Level 2 qualified (or working towards)
  • Able to work weekends and evenings
  • Previous experience in an Aquatics environment would be advantageous, but is not essential as full training will be provided

Lifeguard applicants who do not hold a current Pool Lifeguard Practicing Certificate will be required to complete a qualifying swim in order to progress their application. This involves completing a timed swim of 200m (8 lengths of a 25m pool) within 6 minutes. Short-listed applicants will be invited to complete a swim test, and only those who complete this in the qualifying time period will be invited to attend a face-to-face interview.

Swim tests can be organised at either Kaiapoi or Dudley pools by speaking to reception or the Lifeguard Supervisor on duty prior to the interview. Training for successful applicants for all positions will be discussed following the interview and applicants are required to be available to attend during these times.
